Black-coated vacuum chamber

We recently manufactured a test piece vacuum chamber for a customer with an internal black coating. This sample was to allow our customer to run experiments on the coating itself, which was designed to absorb light, as well as for heat shielding and helping to prevent thermal shock.

Our engineers utilised a graphite-based coating due to the qualities of this material. Graphite is built up from layers of covalent bonds, along with a sea of delocalised electrons — which gives it a high melting and boiling point. This is essential for bakeouts which might need to reach high temperatures. It is also chemically inert which means it would not interact with any other substances within the chamber.

We are currently waiting to hear of the results of the tests.
