We have recently taken on some new employees here at Torr, and we would love to introduce them on our newsletter! It has been lovely to get to know them all and learn about what brought them to Torr.

Nathan Whitlock- Engineering Apprentice

Nathan has recently joined the team to become an apprentice in engineering. Nathan had a less traditional move into engineering as he was previously studying A-levels in English, Maths and Sports before wanting to do something more practical.

He started a T-level in Engineering and reflected on how enjoying Design and Technology at school, as well as learning CAD in his own time inspired him to change toward engineering! Furthermore, he noted that he simply “liked making stuff”! During his T-level he was able to take part in a work placement, where he started to learn about machining!

Nathan spoke about how he enjoys bouldering in his own time and previously taught mixed martial arts – specifically Han Guk Mu Sool®!

He also noted that Torr has allowed him to already learn a lot about machining and how interesting that has been and he would love to learn more about CAD modelling. He noted that he is is open to learning new things, saying he is “trying to get as much as I can, while I can”!

Bronwyn Warlow- Business Administration Apprentice

Bronwyn has recently started with Torr as an apprentice, focusing on business administration. The apprenticeship was a big interest to her due to the idea of learning and working at the same time!

She has had a lot of varied experience before joining us, after studying fashion and photography at college and then moving into the hospitality industry for a few years.

In her spare time, she has a great interest in working on cars, both fixing them up and adding modifications, and has started gymnastics recently!

She mentioned that Torr has been a great “change of pace” for learning new skills, and that she is really interested in learning about the different processes behind a company, mentioning she is fascinated in “seeing how the business works”.

Graham Deeprose – Production Manager

With 24 and a half years of experience in the vacuum industry, our new Production Manager Graham has been a brilliant addition to the team.

He started his career as a welder and has gathered his skills through numerous supervisory and leadership roles across various departments including clean rooms, machine shops, planning and purchasing teams before moving his expertise back to production. He described how he’s “not averse to getting involved and rolling my sleeves up”.

In his free time, he relaxes by going carp fishing, he plays table tennis in 2 different leagues, and values spending time with the family at the theatre and eating out.

Graham spoke about how he wasn’t aware of Torr’s in-depth capabilities before joining, describing how “the coating process is more technical that I thought it would be” and that he was “blown away by the depth of niche technology!”. He mentioned that a huge draw to Torr was the investment we have placed into new machinery and the exciting project work that the business develops alongside its customers.

On his move to Torr, he stated that it is all about “the vacuum industry is what I know and love and where I can contribute and be effective for the company!”.

Isabella Hensher – T-Level Placement Student

Another new starter has been Isabella, who has joined us as part of a placement for her T-level course in Manufacture and Design Engineering.

She noted that the course has featured a mathematical- and physics-based background following into more researching, design and prototyping, and that the course so far as been “not what I thought it would be”.

Sadly, Isabella is only here for a short period over her placement before returning to college but emphasised how interesting this experience has been as her first professional environment. Isabella noted how she found it “nerve-wracking at first” but soon settled into it when she got to know everyone.

Her favourites parts at Torr so far have been learning about our new scanning electron microscope and all of the science behind our products! In her spare time, she is keen to start back up at “inline hockey” and enjoys staying active with running!

Darren Edwards- Commercial Cleaner

Our final new face at Torr to talk about in this edition is our new Commercial Cleaner Darren Edwards.

Darren has had a variety of past positions providing him with his highly unique experience, from being a carer for adults with learning disabilities, to being a driver, working in retail and previous cleaning experience within a school!

He described how the move to Torr has been for him, stating that “people have been really friendly” adding that “I’m quite shy, so that’s better for me!”.

Outside of work Darren enjoys spending time with his son and always makes time for keeping fit, mentioning swimming as an example! He also spoke about how he enjoys carp fishing, however clarified that this is a summer activity for him – “I don’t like it in the winter!” He is a big fan of movies and music and described himself as an animal lover!
