Huge congratulations to Max Taylor, for passing his Level 2 Engineering apprenticeship from East Sussex College in Ore, Hastings! Max has been working towards this achievement while working here at Torr Scientific.
This award covered both the practical and theoretical sides of engineering, splitting his time at college between the workshop and the classroom. However, most of the apprenticeship was completed here in our factory, where Max was able to apply the lessons from his course into real world situations. Something he noted about this approach to education was how fascinating it was to find the subtle differences between how you learn to do something and how that translates to how you complete a task in the workplace!
Max described how he enjoyed “learning while working” and that his favourite parts of the course were the hands-on sections. He highlighted that these practical areas were where he could apply his problem‑solving skills. The practical section included manual turning and milling, as well as welding, 3D printing and benchwork. He let me know that the course spent a whole year on turning and milling!
Max also emphasised that topics such as machining allowed him to explore how there were “different ways to solve the same problem”. Understanding this and knowing how to adapt and overcome different issues is a vital skill to develop into your working life, he explained, as each engineer has their own way of doing things.
In addition to the practical work, there was a focus on the theoretical subjects. This included the science and maths behind engineering and design aspects such as engineering drawings. While this wasn’t one of his favourite parts of the course, it has given him a wider understanding and the theoretical background for the hands-on sections.
We would like to thank Max for his hard work both during his apprenticeship, as well as for his continued passion since completing the course! Here Max is pictured with our General Manager Pat Brown, as well as his apprenticeship award.
