Torr Scientific offers a wide range of natural z-cut quartz vacuum viewports in the Conflat® (CF), ISO or KF flange styles. These viewports are manufactured from a natural z-cut quartz optic and they are sealed by a bonding process.
Natural z-cut quartz viewports are widely utilised for a range of applications due to their excellent broadband optical transmission. Z-cut natural quartz is one of the best materials for transmission over 50 µm and due to its birefringence has transmission across both UV and IR within the ranges: 250nm to 3µm and from 50µm to 1000µm+.
Quartz is naturally birefringent, however there is a specific direction where light is not impacted by this characteristic. This direction is called the optic axis.
The optic axis is also known as the z axis, which is the reason for this viewport being referred to as “z-cut”. This manufacturing technique means that birefringence can be utilised when it is necessary, but at a normal incidence, beams of light will not be impacted by the birefringence.
Our natural z-cut quartz viewports are helium leak tested, cleaned and packed to UHV standards on site at Torr Scientific.

Torr also offers accessories for viewports, such as annealed copper gaskets, viewport safety covers and bolts or clamps for KF or ISO flanges.
*Note: This optic is only available bonded as it cannot withstand the temperatures required for brazing.
