Edward Raine

Edward joined Torr in July as Technical Support Engineer. He has a firm background in the industry, having completed an integrated master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). While studying, he was a member of the GCU racing society that focused on the engineering behind cars. He fondly recalled that the society was tasked with building a car around an engine. This project culminated in an invitation to visit Silverstone with their final product to compete in a race against other universities!

Edward knew he wanted to be an engineer from a young age, “since [he] was in high school” and moved all the way down from Inverness to join Torr Scientific! When talking about his time with Torr, he mentioned he has really enjoyed being thrown into action. He described how he is working on “cutting edge projects” and how exciting it is to be involved with the “renowned institutions” we are proud to call our customers!

Elijah Fuller

Elijah is our most recent addition to Torr, joining the team in September as our Project Coordinator. He pursued the role after completing his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Swansea University earlier in the year. Elijah spoke highly about his time at university, describing how he took part in a 3D printing project to design and construct a remote-controlled car! Furthermore, he recounted his dissertation about the fatigue testing of composites for sub-sea structures, explaining how he tested fibre glass for uses in turbines under the sea.

In his free time, he is a keen golfer and pianist, having achieved a grade 8 award!

On Torr, Elijah described how he is appreciating this opportunity to expand on his technical skills, “exploring a niche side of engineering that I didn’t know much about”.  He complements the “good team atmosphere” and has thoroughly enjoyed being part of projects with “real‑world applications for quantum and vacuum science”.

Emma Pugh

Emma, although not a new member of the team, has recently been able to expand her role here at Torr! She has been here for the last 2 and a half years as a commercial cleaner but has now picked up some new responsibilities as a production operative. She described this as a “new and rewarding challenge” and let us know how it has pushed her “outside my comfort zone and allowed me to grow professionally”.

Before working at Torr, Emma spent 10 years working in childcare and then over a decade supporting adults with learning disabilities, as well as providing care to elderly people in their own homes. Both jobs providing her with a “deeply fulfilling and meaningful” role.

Emma describes herself as “always eager to learn, grow, and take on new challenges” and her hobbies include her love for shopping, thrifting and upcycling, as well as baking when she gets the chance! She highlighted that, most importantly, she values “spending quality time with her family”.

Oby Rawlinson

Oby joined us this summer as a Production Operative, after previously working different jobs as a kitchen porter, barista/waiter and even as a gardener/animal carer over a summer – involving a variety of tasks including “cleaning their mini horses and goat stables (very cute and friendly)”. He described how “None of the jobs I had experienced felt like a good long‑term career even if I enjoyed them”.

He continued with explaining how he has always had a fascination with technology, building his own pc with the help of a friend, having an avid interest in gaming, studying computer science at GCSE and even taking a games development course at college! Although despite this, Oby spoke about how he also had “a great interest in cooking” and studied food technology – even considering a career within a kitchen!

Oby discovered Torr through a family friend, where he was recommended for a role, and even though it was a drastic change from their previous experiences, they were “eager to take the opportunity to learn something new.”

Now he has been working here for a few months, Oby let us know how happy he is in the role “I find my job to be incredibly interesting and feels like a path I will want to commit to and take further”.
