Torr Scientific have enjoyed a close and rewarding relationship with University of Surrey for well over ten years, in particular with the Surface Analysis Laboratory and the Microstructural Studies Unit (MSSU) in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. Long may it continue, but there have been some notable changes in recent months.

David Jones, Microscopy and Analysis Technician (among other roles) in the MSSU, has retired. In his eleven years or so at Surrey, he has performed many imaging and analytical investigations for Torr and has been a pleasure to work with. Dave was last sighted atop The Trundle launching a remote-control glider. We wish him a happy retirement with many years successful flying.

Picking up the baton from Dave is James Whiting, who has a BSc (Hons) in chemistry from Loughborough University. James has been working alongside Dave for a couple of years now and in that time has combined his considerable microscopy and analytical skills with a very helpful approach to working with us. Anyone who enjoys interesting scientific imaging should follow James’ LinkedIn profile. We wish James every success in his role of Experimental Officer in the MSSU.

Finally, Dr Mark Baker who, along with Prof. John Watts, co-supervised one of Torr Scientific’s very own through their Engineering Doctorate, has been awarded a professorship. Mark has expertise in surface analysis and microscopy (among other things) and oversees the MSSU. We hope Professor Mark enjoys his new and well-deserved status.
